Devious Journal Entry

deviantID

I've been a professional freelance illustrator, toy, collectible and product designer for over 15 years. I've worked as a cover artist for several book, journal and magazine publishers, I've done some comic work for independent publishers, I've designed a wide variety of products, and I've worked for about a dozen toy, novelty and collectible companies. About 90% of the work I do now is designing all kinds of collectibles for the Bradford Exchange.

Yes, I am open to commission work of all kinds. BRING IT ON!!!

I'm also willing to field any questions about my work, techniques, or about being a professional illustrator and designer.

I went to Florissant Valley College, majoring in commercial art and ad design. I've actually never taken a painting class. Everything I've learned there was from reading how other artists worked, watching my other illustrator friends work, and trial and error. As for how to get work, that's not an easy question. So many doors have been closed to artists due to photo manipulation, budget cuts, and young art directors who have no idea about illustration and how it's used. Although I've had a long career doing illustration work for major companies, I do very little now. I was lucky in the fact that I was a good designer too, so I could make that transition. There is still a pretty big market for children's book illustration too. It just depends on what you're interested in doing. Just know that it's very tough out there right now, so you have to be very determined.
